Air Pump PCBA: Soldering & Test-Fixture Improvements

During production, manual USB soldering and inconsistent test contact became bottlenecks. The engineering and process engineering teams reviewed the operations on site and focused on fixture positioning and probe alignment.

Implemented / Soldering

USB connector soldering fixture from the project.

Dedicated soldering fixture

Manual USB soldering required repeated positioning. The team developed a dedicated fixture to support the PCB and connector, making the operation easier to set up and repeat.

Implemented / Test contact

Probe alignment adjustment

The test probes did not consistently align with the board contacts. Engineering and process engineering teams inspected the setup and adjusted probe positioning to address the contact issue.

Proposed / Next build

Improve test-point access

The team proposed making test points more accessible to simplify fixture contact in a future build.

The revised arrangement would be reviewed against the board layout and validated before use in production.

Each customer’s board is assessed individually. Manufacturing methods, fixtures and testing plans depend on the board layout, interfaces, software, actual load and order requirements. Production capacity and delivery arrangements are evaluated for the specific project.

Validate the Board With Its Actual Load

Related engineering work examines how air pump controls behave with their actual equipment, through pressure-stability review and extended running tests.

Inflatable display application and installed-load testing.

Performance focus

Pressure stability for inflatable displays

Large inflatable characters and displays need consistent pressure to maintain their shape. The engineering focus was pressure drift during extended operation and intermittent inflation.

Application testing and customer feedback indicated improved pressure stability. Performance requirements are defined for each board, complete product and intended use.

Validation method

Testing with the actual load

During a new air pump development project, the team tested the board with its actual load and monitored inflation stability, temperature rise, operating noise and start/stop response.

The test plan, operating conditions and acceptance criteria are agreed for each project, with findings recorded to guide further improvements.
